About the voyage

Even after two years apart, I‘m still not sure what really happened there: it was one of the most surreal and beautiful experiences of my life, albeit very exhausting on several levels. Antarctica is a place you must work hard for —you can‘t just hop on a plane that will fly you there in comfort. Traveling with the sailing ship Bark Europa was definitely the right choice to get a small glimpse of how the old explorers must have felt on their search for the white continent or the end of the world.

Both the crew and my fellow passengers felt like a little family during this twenty-four-day voyage (map of the trip) from mid-December 2019 to early January 2020.
The route of the voyage

We started in Punta Arenas (Chile); sailed through the Strait of Magellan and the Beagle Channel; passed Cape Horn; before heading for the infamous Drake Passage towards the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. On the way back, we traversed the Drake Passage again for about four days, heading for Ushuaia (Argentina), where the voyage ended.
The Bark Europa

The EUROPA was built in 1911 under the name of "Senator Brockes" at the Stulcken shipyard in Hamburg, on behalf of the city of Hamburg. The ship was commissioned as lightship "Elbe 3" on the river Elbe and later served as a standby vessel.

In 1986 the ship was brought to the Netherlands. In a period of 8 years the ship was completely rebuilt and rigged as a three-masted barque. The Bark Europa is registered as a sail training vessel and participation in the sailing and operation of the ship is part of the overall experience on board.
